Motordrome Speedway Oct. 18, 2008 Piney Lasky Memorial

BY: Mark Southcott (Captain History)

It was a fun time and didn't get too cold. I saw some familiar faces like 2008 Dunn Tire Raceway Park Late Model #2 champion Ron Nurmi, SST Sportsman #41 driver Kevin Lewis and wife Sue and some other WNY faces like those crazy people who sat behind and beside me in the grandstands who could qualify as a comedy act. There wasn't too much carnage for most of the night, but there was some foolishness on the track. Jay Mudra did get within a car's length of the #31 (that car was certainly covered with sponsors!!), but he was throwing sparks for most of the feature and wasn't a serious challenger for the lead. The top two SS cars were in their own zip code though. I did correct the announcer who kept saying Jay was from Holland Speedway with a trip up to the tower to tell him that he was the 2008 DTRP Super Stock champion who won the majority of the features there this season.
It was an overall fun trip despite the the 500+ mile round trip.....
It was nice to be paged by Stan Lasky and meet him. Thanks to the other people who I also met (they knew me anyway!) and their kind words about my RaceNY posts and what I do with my history with my site and such.
The lap sponsorships for the lap leaders was a good deal as always and the wearing of the cowboy hat in victory lane as tradition for the winning drivers gets a thumbs ups as well.
There were some very sharp looking cars especially in the Late Models. Scott Nurmi #20 was around at the end and was probably about 12th. It was a tough night for Tommy Cloce #3 Late Model, Chris Ross #4 Late Model and Jason Dieter #7 in the ex-Spencer/A.J. Cole Lancaster Super Stock car.
The food was very reasonable. The pits had nice grandstands along with spacious VIP towers with their own decks! The drive-in style lot for vehicles in turns three and four to watch the races like at some other tracks on a hill was a cool aspect as well.
I took a bunch of pictures so stay tuned for those to possibly appear. LOL
P.S. NO SNOOKY (Williams #6 Late Model)! BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Thanks for the limo service Howie! .... Where's my hot chocolate?!?!?

Brown Wins Piney Lasky Memorial 100 at Motordrome!

Kostelnik and Phillips Also Winners in Fall Festival 200

(Smithton, PA) Neil Brown, of Acme, PA earned $7,500 after winning the "Piney Lasky Memorial 100" as part of the Fall Festival 200 at Motordrome Speedway. Track Champions Adam Kostelnik (Modifieds) and Shawn Phillips (Subway Street Stocks) defended their home track against outside invaders, notching victories on Saturday October 18, as well.

Heat race winners Dave Rigan and John Komarinski started on the front row for the Super Late Model "Piney Lasky Memorial 100" by virtue of a random pill draw. But, it was former track Champion Garry Wiltout who leaped into the lead at the start. Rigan held the second position until sixth-starting Rick Miller grabbed the runner-up spot on lap 16. On lap 18, tenth starting Neil Brown passed former Champ Miller for second, as ninth-starting Richard Mitchell advanced to third place. On lap 24, Brown made the winning pass of Wiltrout, as 2008 Champ Mitchell took second. With Wiltrout back to third, Brown and Mitchell ran away from the rest of the field, and endured several restarts. On lap 66, a caution flag waved for former Champ Bobby Henry, as a broken shock absorber forced Henry to make a pit stop. Quick pit work kept Henry on the lead lap, as he restarted at the tail of the field. On lap 68, eleventh-starting Will Thomas moved into second

place, and eventually Mitchell retired from competition. By lap 75, Henry and 21st starting Mark Poole were inside the top five after remarkably charging through the field. Like Mitchell, Thomas got a few chances to restart alongside Brown, but could not make a serious challenge for the lead. On lap 82, Henry advanced to second position and looked to be the fastest car on the track after passing every lead lap car except Brown. Henry got three chances to overtake Brown on restarts late in the event, and was closer than any other driver to making a serious bid for the top spot, but never completed a pass. Brown, the leading feature winner of 2008 with five prior victories, steered his Richter Motorsports/Hunter’s Peterbuilt/Davies Ford to his second 100-lap win of the year, after winning his heat race and earning 75-laps of leader bonus money. Henry and Thomas were second and third, with Poole fourth and former Champion Mark Cottone placing fifth.

A thrilling three-car battle had fans screaming throughout the entire 60-lap Modified feature distance. A pair of Ohio invaders took control of the event, and paced the field for 41 laps. Front-row starter Jeff Amsdell led third-generation racer Nick Diano, as they pulled away from the field, with Adam Kostelnik in third. Kostelnik started tenth, and used lapped traffic like a master, taking second from heat winner Diano place on lap 42. With bold, wheel-to-wheel moves Kostelnik, took the lead with nine laps to go and the five time Champion declared Motordrome "his track" in victory lane. Former Lorain and Mansfield Speedway Champ Amsdell was second ahead of Diano, and Motordrome regulars Bobby Shipp and Jim Nicola. Shipp and Diano won the other heats.

With lap leader bonus money on the line in Subway Street Stock 40-lap feature, 2008 Champion Shawn Phillips led all but lap number one after winning his heat race. But, the victory that capped off his "dream season" was anything but easy. Lancaster, New York Track Champion Jay Mudra haunted Phillips’ rear bumper for most of the event. After starting seventh, and taking second place on lap seven, Mudra tried low and high groove passes over and over, in his first visit to Motordrome. But the New Yorker would finish second, after Phillips admitted in victory lane that he "never drove this (car) so hard." Teddy Gibala earned third position at the finish, with heat winner Aaron Minjock fourth, and 17th place starter Mike Bakalon fifth.
