PERRY, NY… An action packed Friday night saw the visiting Casey’s
TQ Midget Series come to the Bullring for some wheel to wheel
heart-pounding action on the historic Perry 1/3rd mile oval. The fans
also saw the competitive SST Modifieds, SST Super Stocks and the 4
cylinders competing as well as the second installment of the crash and
smash series featuring Junkyard Hockey. Feature wins went to Jamie
Collard in the TQ Midgets, Andy Jankowiak in the SST Modifieds, Cassie
Logsdon in the SST Super Stocks and Tommy Catalano was victorious in the
4 cylinders.
The visiting Casey’s TQ Midget series always puts on a great show for
the crowd at WCIS. Jim Fleischman and Wayne Turnbull led the way with
Turnbull getting the early lead. On the back stretch, Chad Heywood took
a wild ride flipping end over end and the report from the scene was that
the driver was OK but the not could be said for the car. On the restart,
Jim Fleischman would have the lead but that would be short lived as
modified pilot Dave Wollaber would take over the lead. The caution would
fly again as Dean McConnaughy spun in turn two. On the restart, Wollaber
would continue to have the advantage but the yellows would fly one more
time as veteran driver Wayne Turnbull collided with another car down the
front stretch. The restart saw “Team Vinnie” up in the top three as
Wollaber would lead SST Modified driver Andy Jankowiak and Jamie Collard
running third. Jamie Collard would look to the inside of Wollaber but
Jonathan Reid’s motor went up in flames just six laps into the race.
The restart saw Wollaber in the lead but that would Jamie Collard would
take over at the point at the halfway mark. Just past halfway, Kent
Turnbull stopped in turn four and that would erase the great battle for
the lead between Team Vinnie members Jamie Collard and Dave Wollaber. A
shootout for the Christiano owned machines as Collard, Wollaber, Bobby
Holmes and Andy Jankowiak were in the top four for the restart. A
shootout at the Bullring between the top four on the restart and it was
Collard leading the way. Team Vinnie would cross the line in the top
three as Jamie Collard would pick up the win over Dave Wollaber and
Bobby Holmes completing the top 3.
The Mighty SST Modifieds took the track for the start of the 35 lap
feature and it was a familiar face finding himself back in victory lane
for the third time this season and it was current WCIS points leader
Andy Jankowiak being that familiar face back in the winner’s circle.
Jim Ling and Lexi Wilson led the way for the start of the 35 lapper with
third place starter John Julicher Jr. getting the advantage. Then on lap
three, Patrick Emerling took over the top spot from Julicher and then
eventual winner Andy Jankowiak was driving like a man on a mission. Andy
J would take over the top spot just before the halfway mark and Andy J
would lead the rest of the event and pick up his third win on the season
and does a Moonwalk in victory lane to celebrate victory number three.
Patrick Emerling would hang on for the runner up spot and John Julicher
Jr. would complete the top three.
Just a note about the SST Modifieds: Lexi Wilson was selected as the
Driver of the Week for next week (July 2nd). Lexi has received two
passes for her fans to come to WCIS and support her, dinner compliments
of the speedway and also has her pit fee waved for the week. Anyone who
is interested in becoming a class sponsor like this at WCIS can feel
free and contact Race Director Don Vogler.
Heat winner and Birthday girl Cassie Logsdon and Jeremy Gray led the
field of the Super Stocks to the green flag and it was Jeremy Gray
leading the way. Gray, Logsdon and Phil Alhart Jr. would have a great
battle for the lead until the first yellow of the night fell for the 13
machine of Jay Canonico spinning down the back stretch. The restart saw
Gray take the top spot but just past the halfway mark, Cassie Logsdon
would retake the top spot away from Gray. Cassie Logsdon would lead the
rest of the event to pick up her first career feature win. It was the
best Birthday present that the Pavilion, NY driver could give herself.
Jeremy Gray would finish second and Brad Collings would round out the
top three.
Eric Haistreiter and Kevin Grom led the field for the start of the 20
lap feature event for the always exciting 4 cylinders and it was
Haistrieter getting the early advantage from his front row starting
spot. Haistreiter would continue to lead the way in the Bill at Da Grill
entry and then on lap number nine, the Rocket made his move to the
front. Tommy Catalano would take over the top spot on the ninth go
around and then two laps later, Charles Buchanan would get his
opportunity to gain the runner up spot and did so but didn’t have
enough time to reel in and pass Catalano and Tommy picked up feature win
number four on the year. Buchanan would cross the line in second and
Haistreiter maintained a top three performance in coming home in third
place.
The Junkyard Hockey team of Jim and Daniel Majchrzak took the checkered
flags aboard the Crash and Smash feature event. The next Crash and Smash
Series event will be on July 17th when Pirates will be on the track for
the annual Pirate Trailer Race.
Next week at the Bullring, there will be Fireworks both on the track and
in the sky as WCIS celebrates the independence Day holiday with
Fireworks plus a regular Friday night racing program featuring the SST
Modifieds, SST Super Stocks, 4 cylinders and the return of the Mini
Cups. Gates open at 5pm with racing to get underway at 7:30 pm sharp.
