EMERLING, JOHNSON ADD TO WIN LIST
A BIG SHOW FOR WELSHANS, AS HOLLAND BEATS MOTHER NATURE

Mother Nature tried to grab a victory at the Holland NASCAR Motorsports Complex on Saturday evening, but the racers and the fans were the winners, as the entire racing program was hustled along and completed shortly before a steady rain hit the area.   On the track, Patrick Emerling of Boston, NY rolled to his second NASCAR Ragingwolf.com Pro Modified win of the year, while T.J. Johnson of South Wales, NY captured his third consecutive Late Models of Tomorrow main.  Ted “Big Show” Welshans of West Falls, NY took his first career Bank of Holland Charger feature win, while Dave Reese, Jr. of Glenwood, NY made it two> straight M&M U-Pull-it Figure 8 Car wins.  Eric Brown of Holland raced to his third 4-cylinder Hornet win of the year, while Ashley Kirchberger of West Seneca, NY celebrated her 21st birthday weekend by being crowned the evening’s Queen Bee winner.

In the 40 lap NASCAR Raginwolf.com Pro Modified event, two early race skirmishes aided Patrick Emerling in moving up from his seventh starting spot.  On a lap three restart, he was able to outgun Tim Welshans to put his Gauthier Blacktopping/Emerling Dealerships mount into the lead.  From that point forward, it was a matter of Emerling staying out of trouble.  He was able to open up a substantial lead, but that lead disappeared for a lap 15 caution flag, and on the restart, Amy Catalano motored into second place.  Catalano was able to keep Emerling in her sights over the caution-free final 25 circuits, but could not muster a challenge.  Emerling handled some late race lapped cars with little incident, while Catalano found herself hung up momentarily in getting through the traffic, allowing Emerling to establish a comfortable margin of victory at the checkers.  Points leader Mike Fiebelkorn, Jr. was a distant third, with Tony Hanbury, in his first Holland start of the season, claiming fourth.

The 25 lap Late Models of Tomorrow main proved to be a rugged affair, as rivals T.J. Johnson and Eldon King III traded paint on numerous occasions.  After Sean Dolan and Mike Ticco diced for the lead early, Johnson worked his Trank Real Estate and Insurance Monte Carlo under Ticco for the top slot on lap 5, with King following to second a lap later.    A lap 12 restart gave King a chance, and he muscled by Johnson on the high side, commencing six laps of side-by-side, “take no prisoners” racing.  A lap 18 yellow for a J.D. Roberts wall banger interrupted the duel, and on the ensuing restart, heavy contact between the two put Johnson way out of shape, which resulted in a domino effect back through the field, knocking the Vince Sands ride out of action.  King maintained the top spot until a he briefly bobbled exiting turn four on the 23rd lap giving Johnson one final opportunity - Johnson powered to the inside and was able to outdrag King into turn one to take the lead and drive on to his sixth win of the 2010 campaign.  King had to settle for second, while Nick Crassi, who was about five car lengths behind the lead duo, placed third.

“Lousy luck for the leaders” would be the beast way to describe the Bank of Holland Chargers 30 lap event.  Jim Loffredo looked as if he was cruising away to his first win of the season, when his engine let go with just six laps remaining.  Tom Northem, looking for his first of the season, then inherited the lead, but on the 27th lap, he lost the handle on his ride in turn four.  Ted Welshans, who had been challenging Northem for position through most of the event, took over the point for the final three laps, and “Big Show,” in his fifth year of Charger competition, kept things together in his Boston Deli/Klispies Motorsports/The Swat Store Malibu to earn his first career Charger victory.  Brother Matt Welshans, in just his second start of the season, chased Ted home in second, while Jason Eck, making his first Holland Charger start, just edged Bill Wise for the number three slot.

The 4-cylinder Hornet/Queen Bee field ran a very competitive, caution-free 30 lap go.  Jason Nellist took the early lead, but “Builder Bob” Marzec slipped under Nellist for the top spot on the 11th lap.  Chris Powers, in his best run of the year, chased down Marzec, and raced by for the top spot on lap 23, but defending divisional champ Eric Brown was on the move, as he worked his Bruce’s Automotive Fiero by Marzec for second a lap later, then quickly reeled in Powers.  The two went at it side-by-side for three laps before Brown was finally able to clear and assume command on the 27th lap, driving on for the win.  Powers had an impressive race to place second, while points leader George Quintana came from a dead last starting spot in the 24 car field to grab third.  With her overall sixth place finish, Ashley Kirchberger earned her fifth Queen Bee victory of the year as the first female drive across the line.

Dave Reese, Jr. took advantage of a lap 4 restart to shuffle his Shanley Collision/Majestic Pools Dodge by Scott Pastorius and claim the 12 lap M&M U-Pull-It Figure 8 Car main for his third win of the year.  Pastorius held off a late race challenge from Mike Eckam for second place.

The racing program started with the annual Holland Bar Cup Challenge, as area restaurant and tavern owners and bartenders competed on the oval in Speedway provided 4-cylinder cars.   Wayne Abbott from The Flipside in Stykersville, NY was crowned the 2010 Bar Cup champion.

News and Notes – In order to make every effort to get the entire event schedule in, the racing program started 15 minutes early and was completed in just over two hours – a great effort on the part of all the racing teams and track officials to move things along - light sprinkles were felt through the Pro Modified main (the final race), and within ten minutes of the final checkers, the precipitation developed> into a steady rain ... a couple of points leaders going into the evening had less than stellar nights - Charger top dog Zach Myers was forced to park after practice with rear end troubles in his Malibu, while Jason Adams, the Figure 8 Car points leader, was the first car out of that event with mechanical issues ... Rich Carnes, battling Myers for the Charger points title, did not have a much better night,
as he and Matt Hoctor tangled when they got into the fluid left by the Jim Loffredo expired engine ... in addition to Jason Eck making his first Charger start, 4-cylinder veteran Waylon Price hopped aboard the Mike Flaig Monte Carlo for his initial Charger start ... past Charger champ Mark Hoch made his initial foray into Pro Modified racing, but steering problems knocked him out of action early in the event.

The annual Budweiser 100, this year featuring the NASCAR Raginwolf.com Pro Modifieds will highlight the August 28th card at the Holland NASCAR Motorsports Complex.  A strong field of open-wheeled racers is expected for the $2,000 to win event, with qualifying heats determining the starting grid.  The Late Models of Tomorrow, Bank of Holland Chargers, 4-cylinder Hornets and Queen Bees and the M&M U-Pull-It Figure 8 Cars plus the return of the Casey’s TQ Midget Series will round out the slate.  Pit gates will open at 3:00, with grandstand gates opening at 4:00 - racing will get underway at the earlier than usual starting time of 6:00 pm.  For more information, contact the Holland office at (716)-537-2272 or visit the web site at www.hollandspeedway.com.
