Championship Night 2009
(North East, PA- September 5, 2009) Lake Erie Speedway ended the 2009 season with Championship Night on
Saturday night, featuring a full schedule of races and discounted
tickets and food for race fans.
The Boyer RV Center Bandoleros raced first on Saturday night. Thirteen Bandoleros started the twelve-lap race, with #23 Devon Moore starting the race in first position but slowly falling back behind a number of cars. #1 Brandon DeBrakeleer took over the first position during Lap 2. #9 Carl Vilardo IV began the race and remained in the second position for the first seven laps, but #69 Brody Wood battled for this position for many laps. During Lap 8, Wood took over the second position with Vilardo IV trailing him. Moore fell to the seventh position and stayed there for the rest of the race. DeBrakeleer held onto his position for a 1st place finish, followed by Wood, Vilardo IV, #81 Michael Walker, and #21 Alexis Wilson. DeBrakeleer finished the season as the 2009 Bandoleros Champion. Next on the track were the Jensens Target Collision Compacts. #43 Jason Johnson began the fifteen-lap race in first position, but #21 Mike Neubauer took over that position in Lap 5. #77 Dave McAvoy made a quick move to second position during Lap 6 and then first position during Lap 8. #7 Angela McAvoy moved into the second position during Lap 12 but wasn’t able to pass Dave McAvoy. Dave McAvoy was able to hold onto his position to finish in first place, with Angela McAvoy finishing in 2nd place, #95 Jonathan Breads in 3rd place, #34b Brandon Huffman in 4th place, and #43 Jason Johnson in 5th place. Breads finished the 2009 season as Compacts Champion. The Street Stocks feature was next. #99 Dennis Kszos began the race in first position, followed closely by #20 John Denny. #1 Jeff Campbell raced into second position during Lap 5 while Denny fell back a position. The first caution flag of the race was thrown when #55 Ken Moore Jr. spun out during Lap 6. #83 Russ Conti left the race during Lap 5 with a flat tire. #11 Ed Hall also spun out during Lap 19, causing another caution flag to be thrown. Kszos finished the race in 1st place, followed by Campbell in 2nd place, Denny in 3rd, Crossman in 4th, and #01 Leslie Bohrer in 5th place. Campbell was then recognized as the 2009 Street Stocks Champion following the race. The next feature race of the evening was the Career Concepts Legends. #38 Dan Snyder started in first position, with #3 Zac Carter in second position for the twenty-lap race. #25 Steve Sunday moved quick into the third position, while #8 Justin Hines trailed close behind. A small collision during Lap 7 among many cars caused a caution flag to be thrown. #9 Larry Occhibone left the race following this caution flag, only to return later in the race. Sunday moved into first position during Lap 12 and Hines moved into second position during the same lap. During Lap 15, Hines was able to slide by Sunday to take over the first position with ten laps remaining. #21 Patrick Lyden raced into the fourth position, while Snyder dropped to fifth position during Lap 20. Hines took over a lengthy lead during Lap 21 to finish the race in 1st place. Carter quickly crossed the finish line in 2nd place, Lyden in 3rd place, Sunday in 4th place, and #38w Daniel Weaver in 5th place. Sunday was then acknowledged as the 2009 Legends Champion after the race. The Dodge Modifieds were next on the track. The race began with a fast caution flag when #13 Nate Carlson spun out during Lap 1. #17 Eric Bohrer and #11 Casey Swabik battled for first position for the first six laps until Bohrer pulled out in front. Carlson spun out again during Lap 9, causing yet another caution flag to be thrown. #1 Terry Akerly took over the first position after the caution flag and #24 Randy Culver taking over the second position, followed by #32 Eric McCray going into Lap 13. Culver slipped in front of Akerly during Lap 23 and pulled ahead of the pack. Culver finished the race in 1st place, Akerly in 2nd, McCray in 3rd, #14 Carter Mook in 4th, and Swabik in 5th. McCray was then praised for ending the season as the 2009 Modified Champion. Saturday night and the 2009 Speedway season ended with the forty-lap Plyler Overhead Door Late Model feature event. #55 Matt Barndt started out in front as #59 Bryce Scott started in second position. #3 Jeff Brown and #17 Chris Bailey Jr. battled for third and fourth position going into Lap 10. The first caution flag of the race was thrown when #52 Joe Bizzaro and #56 Rich Skora tangled in Lap 19. #9 Will Thomas moved into third position during Lap 24 and then into second position during Lap 28. Skora dropped to fifth position during Lap 28. Bizzaro and Brown collided during Lap 30, causing a caution flag to be thrown. Barndt finished the race in 1st place, followed by Thomas in 2nd, Scott in 3rd place, and Skora and #65 George Skora III in 4th and 5th places, respectively. Following the last race, Thomas was recognized as the 2009 Late Models Champion. |
