Delevan, NY- Thunderstorms gave way to clearing skies
for great racing weather Friday night at Arcade International Raceway as
the ASCS Patriot Sprints rolled in for their first visit since 2006.
They were joined on the night by four of AIR’s regular
divisions; E-mods, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, and Pure Stocks.
The Emerling Resale Center FASTRAK Late Models had the night off.
Street Stock heat winners Andy Michael (17x) and Chris Conkey
(23c) would make up the third row of the feature event after an
inversion, while the field was lead to the green by Leon Szweda (26) and
Jeff Woodward (18). The
first caution of the race flew at lap two when Szweda would have a
run-in with the front stretch wall.
The incident caused the front of the field to be shuffled quite a
bit, allowing Andy Michael to restart second.
On the double-file restart, Michael would jump to the lead and
hold onto it for the remaining distance to record his 5th
feature win of the season. Tim Bruce (75) pulled off a pass down the backstretch on
Steve Mowery (48s) on the final lap to take second.
Newcomer to Arcade, Mike Munsee (27H) was able to take a heat win
in the E-mods along with Darren Tarabori (6).
Richard Michael Jr. (17x) and Kyle Bedell (44) would lead the
feature field on the intial start, only to be slowed five laps later
when a spin by George Ritter Jr. (72) brought out the first caution.
One lap after the restart, four-time 2009 feature winner Al
Brewer (71) was on the move when a hopped wheel sent his car tumbling
end-over-end before coming to rest in turn one.
The crash was a horrific sight to onlookers, but just moments
later Al was out of the car and walking around.
After the large cleanup effort, racing resumed with Michael in
the lead. Meanwhile, Darren
Tarabori (6) was on a charge with his v-6 powered machine, grabbing
second away from Bedell. Bedell
would lose the handle on his #44 to bring out a third caution on lap 8.
After his spin, Bedell began his charge back through the now
dwindling field of E-mods. By
lap 12, he was passing his brother Craig’s #7J for fourth and he would
get by Munsee for third on the following lap.
Tarabori dropped out of the race on lap 16.
Restarting second, Kyle Bedell still didn’t have enough to give
Rich Michael a challenge, who went on to his second victory of the
season.
The ASCS Patriot Sprint heats and dash went off without a hitch,
with each of them being run flag-to-flag caution-free.
The main however would not be so clean.
In three different tries at getting one lap in the books, Chuck
Hebing (45), Gary Troutman (44), and Bobby Breen (9) were among the
competitors to be taken out of competition.
Once the race finally got past lap one, the field would again be
slowed a number of times. No
caution however, would stop Budda Broderick (5) from driving away from
the field to record his first-ever ASCS Patriot Sprint feature win.
Second was Tim Kelly (12). Jared
Zimbardi (35) really put on a show for the fans coming from 13th
to 3rd by race end.
In the Mini Stocks, yet another newcomer to Arcade, Chis Paar
(9x), would prove to be a
strong competitor against the Arcade regulars.
Brad Ullman (46x) would lead the field to the green.
A four-way battle raged in the opening laps between Ullman, Paar,
Nick Snayczuk (12), and point-leader Levi Watson (26).
Watson’s 26 would slow on lap three and eventually pull-off on
lap seven. On a lap three
restart, Paar was able to steal away the lead from Ullman and retain it
until he apparently had a flat on lap 10.
This left Ullman and Snayczuk to battle it out amongst themselves
in the final five laps. Snayczuk
would make a charge under Ullman with two laps to go, however he
couldn’t quite stick it and would have to settle for second behind
Ullman. The win was
Ullman’s fourth of the season.
John Ellwood (27) and Curt Pastorius (42) would start and finish
1-2 in the ten lap pure stock feature.
Pastorius lead from the initial green flag, but Ellwood got back
by on the high side on lap two. Pastorius
made many attempts at getting by Ellwood in the remaining laps, but
could never seem to get more than a fender on him.
Youngster Blane Krott (72) would round out the top three.
